Is Innovation Planned or Accidental?

Steve Jobs said this at the Apple Worldwide Developers' Conference in 1997:  " People think focus means saying yes to the thing you've got to focus on. But that's not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I'm actually as proud of the things we haven't done as the things I have done. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things. "  In today's ultra-competitive world of consumer electronics and design, we hear of new business innovations frequently. Take a look at this year's CES honorees .  None of these innovations are produced by chance. The product managers, entrepreneurs and engineers creating these amazing products follow a set process to make them happen.  Or do they? Is Innovation Result of Focused Effort? Is Innovation Result of Saying No to 1,000 things? Is Innovation Planned or Accidental ?

The Growth of Small Business in 2013

Image
Washington: US small businesses hired the most workers in nearly eight years in December, 2013. Small business is more confident about the future, doing well financially, and growing. Small business owners rebounded from a dismal showing in October to close out the year with their two highest hiring totals of 2013, according to  the latest jobs report   from payroll processing firm ADP. “The job market has kicked into a higher gear,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, which helps prepare the report. “We’re now 4 ½ years into this economic recovery and there have been a lot of false starts. ... But this time it does feel more fundamental, more real, more broad-based.” The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) said on Wednesday small business owners added an average of 0.24 workers per firm last month, the largest since February 2006. “Job creation is slowly moving in a positive direction,” the NFIB said in a statement. The NFIB survey of 635 of ...

Why most entrepreneurs fail?

"I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." – Michael Jordan Entrepreneurship  is very hard! It takes a lot of things to succeed.  Tarang Shah wrote an amazing first-hand resource  book  for technology entrepreneurs that addresses three critical questions: 1. Why do most startups and entrepreneurs fail, and what you can learn from these failures? 2. Why do few entrepreneurs succeed, and what is their secret sauce? 3. What do startups need to get funded, and what are VCs looking from startups? Rather than present anecdotal study or sharing grapevine stories, Tarang went straight to the source: interviewing best venture capitalists that evaluate, fund and mentor these start-ups (many of whom have been entrepreneurs themselves), and founders of today's hot technology start-ups who are leadi...

Corporate Apparel for Employee & Customer Recognition

Image
Corporate Apparel Corporate apparel has become one of the most popular elements of promotional programs. High visibility and usefulness are the main reasons for such high demand. As you can imagine, the increased popularity of sports in the business world has helped the surge of wearables among corporations. Jackets, shirts, sweaters and caps with corporate logos are clearly visible on golf courses and sporting events. With a trend moving toward a more relaxed dress code for employees, companies have implemented "Corporate Casual" or "Dress Down" days, hoping to improve morale and productivity. This has helped build the demand for quality imprinted wearables, which are usually sought after by employees and customers alike. Corporate Apparel Uses Reward employees upon completion of a project Provide a uniformed look at trade shows Give to valued customers as a meeting gift Reward sales achievement Enliven a company outing Outfit company teams and participants in spor...

Business Cards with QR Code. Good Idea?

Image
Couple of years ago, QR codes were the rage. I added QR code to my business card back in 2011. Most of us were caught up in the QR code innovation mania. Is it still a good idea though to have your new business card with QR code? Aaron Stout predicted the Death of the QR Code in 2013 in an article on Marketing Land. He gave five reasons as to why this is a dying breed. Do you agree with Aaron? Are QR codes essentially dead? In an article on Mashable yesterday on "Best Practices for Business Cards in the Digital Age", Rebecca Hiscott opined that "Don't make the card too cluttered; QR codes  are nifty, but they also take up a lot of room. Only include a QR code on your business card if you're linking to a site that is optimized for mobile viewing." The biggest reason for QR codes demise may have to do with lack of standardized reader that gets shipped with the mobile operating systems including iOS and Android. Most folks don't bother installing or downl...

Why is entrepreneurship so hard?

Why is entrepreneurship so hard?  1. It starts with the word itself: It's a really long word to speak and spell. Try it without a spell checker. 2. There are no rules to becoming a successful entrepreneur - who do you really learn from? 3. We hear stories from the really successful entrepreneurs - we begin to think it's easy. 4. Most entrepreneurs fail - since our society doesn't celebrate failures, often we don't learn from these. 5. It requires a lot of things to hit that home run: plan, idea, money, 24/7 work, frugality, time, execution, people, passion, perseverance, timing, marketing, technology, mentor, health, balance, fun and focus. I wish all startup founders and entrepreneurs lots of success in 2014! Rock the boat entrepreneurs!! Connect with me on oGoing
